RUSSELL CUMPSTON

Russell G. (Kumpy) Cumpston, 88, passed away December 5, 2016, at his home in Cumberland, MD, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Russ was born in Kausooth, WV, on November 9, 1928, to the late Glenn and Freda (Grandon), and was the oldest of nine children. He was the loving husband of Helen (Phillips) for 66 years; proud father of Rick (deceased), Randy and wife, Stephanie Richmond, VA and Sandy Cumberland; grandfather to Benjamin Cumberland, Andrew and wife, Sarah Richmond, VA, Melissa (Cumpston) and husband, Reggie Richardson Spotsylvania, VA and Noelle (Jones) and husband, Buck Sutton Stafford, VA; and was a precious great-grandfather to Kayla, Connor, Campbell, Ann Peyton, Zoe and LB.

Surviving are Betty Stewart, Burton, WV, George and wife, Nancy, Cameron WV, Jan Cosgray, Claysville PA, Nancy and husband, Bill Moore, Darlington PA, Rene Hanshue, Louisville KY, Charles, Ft. Lee, NJ and Susan and husband, Terry Bowman, Hanover Twsp PA; sister-in-law, Evelyn Phillips, Weirton WV.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Bartrug of Burton WV, brother-inlaw’s Junior Stewart, Bud Cosgray, Jerry Hanshue, Raymond and Jim Phillips Weirton WV and sister-in-law, Rose Phillips Weirton, WV.  Numerous nieces and nephews were also a big part of his life.

After graduating from Cameron High School, Russ enlisted in the Navy and was proud to be a World War II veteran. He had a long and successful career with Columbia Gas Transmission. After retirement, he enjoyed many hours in his workshop making furniture and working on projects, helping family and friends, gardening, and traveling. He was known to have the most meticulous lawn in Bowling Green. He was very active with the Cumberland Church of Christ.

Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 15205 McMullen Highway SW, Cresaptown, MD on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The funeral service will immediately follow, at the funeral home, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Steve Hershberger and Rev. Dick Bartrug officiating.

Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
