ROBERT JOHNSON

Reverend Robert Paul Johnson, 86, of Wheeling, WV died on Thursday, February 23, 2017 in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling, WV.

He was born September 27, 1930 in Wheeling, WV the son of the late Bert and Leone Marie Williams Johnson. Robert was a retired Methodist Minister having served several churches in West Virginia and in Garrett County, Maryland.

He was a member of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church for 41 years, and returned to Christ United Methodist Church in Wheeling, WV upon his retirement.

He was a past Chaplain at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, WV and a past Chaplain of Ministry at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, WV.

He worked with the shut ins at Christ United Methodist Church in Wheeling, WV; he supported the House of the Carpenter on Wheeling Island in Wheeling, WV; was a past delegate to the World Methodist Conference five different times; worked for several years and was a past chairman of the Wheeling, WV soup kitchen and served with the youth service system.

He also was a volunteer for Amedisy Hospice Care in Wheeling, WV.

In 1991, Robert received the Harry Denman award given for excellence in Evangelism by the Foundation for Evangelism. He was the first one to receive this award.

He was a 60 year member of Rotary International and most recently was a member of the Wheeling Rotary Club in Wheeling, WV.

While at the Wheeling Rotary Club, he received the Milt Gutman Award recognizing his service to the club and also received the Paul Harris award.

He served as President of the Grafton, WV club and the Wheeling, WV club. Robert was an avid WVU fan, loved Christmas and going to the Festival of Lights each year with his family.

He had a special love for his wife, Alma, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving are his loving wife, Alma Gay Bartlett Johnson; his children, Paul Johnson, Kent Johnson (Barbara), Julie Orr, Berta Leone (Stephen), Larna Haddix (David) and Charlie Johnson (Lori); his grandchildren, Aaron Johnson (Khelsea), Carrie Matthys, Rachel Johnson, twins, Meghan and Morgan Johnson, Kristin and Michael Haddix and his great grandchildren, Maddox, Maverick, Memphis, MacKoy, Caleb, Mason, and Parker.

Friends were received on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. at the Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Rd, Wheeling, WV 304 232-2732, and on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 1:30 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 1232 National Rd, Wheeling, WV with the Reverend Jacob Steele officiating.

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV.
