JOHN CAREY

John “Jack” Howard Carey Sr., 87, of Follansbee, WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday peacefully with his dear family by his side after a sudden and short illness.

Jack was born on July 4, 1929 in Wellsburg, WV. He was the son of the late Alec and Pauline (Arthurs) Carey.

Jack retired from Koppers in 1994. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jack was a member of the award winning Four Freshman Barbershop Quartet and 60 years in the Barbershop organization S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. He served his faith by being a lay speaker, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, worship leader and many other facets at the Wellsburg Church of the Nazarene, but recently at the Follansbee Church of Christ. Jack will be remembered for his songs, laughter, Spaghetti night, sense of humor, magic tricks, famous chili; but most of all, for being a true family man.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his son, David Carey, four brothers, Alec, Billy, Harold and Paul Carey, two sisters, Mary Lou Ross and Donna Mae Ennis.

Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mabel (Beagle) Carey, three children, John Carey of Florida, Joyce (Doug) Mason, and LuAnn (Jonathan) Radcliffe, all of Follansbee, WV, a daughter-in-law, Lynn Carey, seven grandchildren, Jason (Amanda) Carey, Teresa (Brian) Kelley, Christine (Kevin) Elson, Douglas (Courtney) Mason, Trent Radcliffe, Jackson Carey, and J.T. Radcliffe, five great grandchildren, Andrew and Jayden Carey, Kelsey and Kayla Elson and Jude Mason, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. and again on Wednesday 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304) 527-1717 with his friends, Bill and Dan Cooper, officiating.

Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV, with military honors.
