Together Again

Lester Ray “Buck” Verner, 78, of Wellsburg, WV joined his wife, Ethel, eternally on Monday, September 4, 2017 at home.

Born on January 31, 1939 in Wellsburg, WV, a son of the late Lester and Freda (Roberts) Verner. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Ethel (Groves) Verner, on July 2, 2017; a grandson, Corey Gamble; and two sisters, Doris Coleman and Deloris Bozich.

He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1956, and graduated from West Liberty State College in 1960 with a bachelor’s in chemistry. Buck taught chemistry at Follansbee High School from 1960-1964, and he retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation with over 25 years of service as a turn foreman in the 80 Inch.

Buck had a passion for the Wellsburg B.P.O.E. 1553, having served as past Exalted Ruler, past lodge treasurer, past district deputy, W.Va. State Elk of the Year, and state officer as well as the Elks golf league. Together with his wife, Ethel, they enjoyed many trips to Florida with their close friends, Bonnie and Sonny Kerr.

Buck is survived by four devoted children, Lynne (Puff) Brownlee, and Valerie (Larry) Hood, both of Wellsburg, WV, Craig (Shari) Verner of Long Beach, Calif., and Dena Verner and her fiance Jim Kohout of Wellsburg, WV; two sisters, Betty Cionni of Follansbee, WV, and Katy O’Connell of Wellsburg, WV; seven grandchildren, Casey (Tim) Stanley, Channce Gamble, Kyle and Kayla Hood, Bryana (Tony) Zaragoza, Wesley Verner, and Erika (Sam) Mack; four great grandchildren, Maurice Gamble, Shelby Adams, Lilly Stanley, and Kaleigh Gamble.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m, at the Mullenbach Funeral Home, 669 Main St., Follansbee, WV, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. with Elder Joy Leasure officiating.

Interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery in Wellsburg, WV.

The Elks Lodge will hold services Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
