Eleanor M. Loy, 89, of Sherrard, WV, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Wheeling Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born May 20, 1928, at home to the late Floyd W. Loy and Margaret E. McConnell Loy. She attended Sherrard High School and then began a life of various careers that she worked until she was 78.
Eleanor worked for the G.C. Murphy Company in Wheeling for a short time before she began working as home help for numerous families in the Sherrard area, including the Hahles, Niebergalls, Garvins, Gardners, Carrigans, Kahlbaughs, Shepherds, and Cooks.
She tended house, babysat and provided elder care, while spoiling their family pets with treats. Most years she worked seven days a week, sometimes 14 hours a day, and walked to most of these jobs. She tirelessly came when called upon to help.
At one time she also did volunteer work for different organizations, such as the 4-H, Boy Scouts and Society for the Blind, to name a few.
She attended both Allen Grove Presbyterian Church and Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and continued to support both in later years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene P. Loy; and sister, Lois E. Archey.
She is survived by her brother, William “Sonny” Loy; sister-in-law, Carol Loy; and two close cousins, Dave McConnell and Barbara Ruckman.
Also surviving are the nieces and nephews whom she helped raise: Rick Archey, Russ Archey, Robert Loy, Fritz Loy, Randy Archey, Rob Archey, Anne Loy, Rhonda Archey, Rita Custer, Roger Archey and Rodd Archey, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
At her request, there will be no visitation.
Eleanor will be cremated with her ashes being interred at the convenience of the family.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at a date to be announced, so family and friends may celebrate her life and share their memories of her.
