Patricia A. Nicholl Gompers, 89, of Wheeling, WV, where she resided, passed away on August 31, 2018 at Bishop Bransfield Continuous Care Center, Wheeling, WV.
She was born February 27, 1929 in Wheeling, WV, the daughter of the late Edward C. and Mabel Simpson Nicholl.
Patricia was a member of St. Michael Parish, Wheeling, WV; the Mother’s Club; Cub and Brownie Scouts Assistant; and Funeral Mass luncheons’ volunteer. She was a member of the Wheeling Hospital Auxiliary Board and 16-year volunteer; sustaining member of the Junior League of Wheeling; member and past president of Wheeling Jesuit University Charter Guild; and a ready volunteer in many church, school and civic activities.
She was an ardent sports fan (Pirates, Steelers, WVU, and all athletic activities at our local schools.) For hobbies, she was an avid reader and took great pride in crewel embroidering, and created the yearly family calendar.
Most of all, she was a loving wife and mother who dedicated her life to her family and so much enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Margaret Mary Gompers; a sister, Martha Maclay; and brother-in-law, St. E. “Mac” Maclay.
Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years, Joseph A. Gompers; and 11 wonderful children, Joseph N. Gompers (Kathleen), John E. Gompers (Priscilla), Patricia G. Duffin (Kevin), Timothy A. Gompers (Anne), Thomas L. Gompers (Sarah), James C. Gompers (Robin), Matthew W. Gompers (Victoria), and Edward D. Gompers (Linda), all of Wheeling, WV, Ann G. O’Malley (Mark Schienberg) of New York City, Mary J. Ryan (Timothy), of Wilmette, IL., and Eric M. Gompers (Kimberly), of Pittsburgh, PA; 30 grandchildren, Kelly Lohri, Michael Gompers, Sarah Gompers, Andrew Gompers, Timothy O’Malley, Megan Phillips, Emily Burr, Kevin Duffin, Lauren McInturf, Julie Alexander, Maggie Havelka, Katelyn Peluchette, Alexander Gompers, Erik Gompers, Abagail Gompers, Brad Leonard, Natalie Rayl, Matthew Leonard, Christine Gompers, Hannah Gompers, Caroline Gompers, Ellen Gompers, Henry Gompers, Sophie Ryan, William Ryan, Bradley Gompers, Emma Gompers, Charles Gompers, Samuel Gompers and Greta Gompers; 16 great-grandchildren; two additional great- grandchildren expected, and numerous nieces and nephews, all dearly loved.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 3-8 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV. Rosary devotions will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1225 National Road, Wheeling, WV with Msgr. Joseph Peterson and Rev. William Matheny as co-celebrant. Interment will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
