BERNICE BARTELS

Bernice Ann McManus Bartels passed away on December 15, 2018.

Bernice was born on January 2, 1934 in Portsmouth, Ohio.

She was the daughter of Stanley Ray and Louise Claxon McManus.

She was a graduate of Clay High School in Scioto County, Ohio and received her teaching degrees from Ohio University.

She taught kindergarten and Title 1 Reading in the Union Local school district, until her retirement in 1996. Along with her husband Bill, she also spent many years as caretaker of the Ohio University’s Dysart Woods Land Laboratory.

Bernice was a member of Belmont United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where her church community was an important part of her life. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, doing genealogical research, and most importantly, spending time with her family.

Bernice was proceeded in death by her husband, William M. Bartels; her parents; and brother, Doug McManus. Surviving are four children; Mitchell (Anne) Bartels, Michael (Janet) Bartels, Martha Scott, and Mary (Kerry) Kemp. Bernice was extremely proud of her six grandchildren; Jacqueline (Chris) Yahn, Michael (Anne) Bartels, Matt Scott, Sarah Scott, Hannah Kemp, Jonathan Kemp; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Laine Bartels. She is also survived by her brother, Mickey (Mona) McManus; sister-in-law, Velma McManus; as well as a niece, two nephews, and many cousins, of the Portsmouth area.

Funeral services will be held at Patron Funeral Homes & Crematory Kelly Kemp Braido, 322 N. Main Street, Bethesda, Ohio, where friends and family may call Tuesday, December 18 from 11 a.m., until the time of service beginning at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow at Belmont Cemetery, Belmont, Ohio.
