Claims of Hate Crimes Erroneous

Americans have been told over and over again that our honesty in talking about the campaign of terrorism aimed at us and some European nations is dangerous and wrong. Why, even using the term “Islamic terrorists” victimizes the vast majority of Muslims, who are peaceful, we are warned. It leads to hate crimes against innocent Muslims, we are assured.

Well, no. It does not. The FBI has reported that in 2009, hate crimes were down 15 percent compared to 2008 – and were at their lowest point in 15 years.

There is no evidence of an increase in hate crimes directed at Muslims.

That says much about Americans as a nation. It also is a reminder that there is no good reason for us not to be honest and open in debating Islamic terrorism and how to stop it.
