Keep Meetings At Public’s Convenience

Public bodies such as municipal councils, county commissions and boards of education often hold meetings during evening hours because that seems to be the most convenient time for members of the public who need or want to attend.

Wheeling City Council members are considering changes in their regular meeting times, however. Currently, council convenes at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, in addition to any special meetings that are necessary.

It has been suggested meeting times should be changed, perhaps alternating between noon and 5:30 p.m.

While noon meetings might appeal to some, they make attendance difficult if not impossible for those – perhaps including some members of council – who work during the day. In addition, finding places to park at noon on a weekday would be a challenge for those wishing to attend meetings.

Council members should ensure meeting times are the most convenient for those they serve – the people of Wheeling.
