Don’t Reward Liars With School Funds

Gov. John Kasich reportedly wants to use state funding to reward Ohio public schools that meet certain criteria for academic quality. That’s fine, as long as excellence and not just skill in manipulating statistics is involved.

Kasich was to discuss his plan for school funding today. Although he was tight-lipped about details, some sort of incentive plan may be in the works.

But some school districts, including the enormous one in Columbus, have been guilty of lying about statistics regarding school quality.

Concern about whether incentives are based on reality or carefully massaged statistics is common among educators. They are right.

So if state officials use state funds to reward schools for excellence, they should ensure reports on academic quality are accurate – and honest.
