Road, Bridge Funds A Pressing Concern

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and West Virginia legislators have exceedingly full plates this winter and spring. The last thing they need is one more knotty problem to solve.

But a challenge that has many state leaders worried – funding for highways and bridges – needs attention soon. That was made apparent last week when Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox said Division of Highways funding will drop by $8.5 million next year, in part because the state will lose $35 million in federal funding.

Money available for the DOH already is far short of meeting needs. Clearly, once the current legislative session ends, highway and bridge money needs to be a priority for state officials.
