Keeping Our Valley’s ‘Backyard’ Clean

One of the most wonderful – and important – traditions in our valley is the annual Ohio River Sweep. Each year, thousands of residents in states bordering the majestic stream spend a day clearing trash and debris from the river’s banks.

In many ways, the river is our collective backyard. Keeping it clean makes the river more pleasant for recreation and more appealing for tourists and business people looking at our area for potential job creation.

This year’s River Sweep, again sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, is set for next Saturday. Cleanup work is planned in most Northern Panhandle and East Ohio counties. If you’re interested in helping – and we hope you are – here are telephone numbers the ORSANCO suggests can be called to reach coordinators in each county:

Brooke: 304-737-1599.

Hancock: 304-374-1894.

Marshall: 304-845-3892.

Ohio: 304-234-0241.

Tyler: 304-758-2136.

Wetzel: 304-455-9130.

Belmont: 740-296-5376.

Jefferson: 740-283-8614.

If you have some time to spare next Saturday, we encourage you to participate in River Sweep 2013.
