Demolish Structure On Wheeling Island
High on the priority list of buildings to be torn down by city government should be the old Gene Long Community Center on Wheeling Island. Now owned by the city, the structure is literally falling apart.
City officials already have taken one step toward razing the structure, by looking into whether any private developers want it. None has stepped forward.
In demolishing the building, city officials should look into the possibility of preserving part of a corner of the structure. It features a record of historic Ohio River floods, dating back generations.
One way or another, however, the large brick building needs to go. It is an eyesore as well as a safety and health hazard. Unless someone speaks up quickly with a plan to renovate it, the building ought to be razed.
