Protect Those Who Safeguard Children
One of the toughest, and sometimes most dangerous, jobs in West Virginia is that of caseworkers for Child Protective Services. They are the men and women who sometimes have to take children from their parents to ensure harm or even death does not come to the youngsters.
Obviously, that does not make CPS caseworkers very popular with abusive and/or neglectful parents. Some see little difference between slapping a child around and assaulting a state employee.
And why not? As state legislators were told recently, the CPS workers often are in dangerous situations, with few defenses.
CPS caseworkers save young lives. They deserve all the security state government can give them in doing their jobs.
Legislators should look into the matter. If the caseworkers need better equipment, authorization to carry non-lethal weapons or other help, they should get it.
