Stage-Managing Comments at EPA

Environmental Protection Agency officials have become masters of a technique bureaucrats use to make it look like they are taking the public’s opinions into account – while carefully steering comments toward the agency’s preferred goal.

An example of that is in the EPA’s plan to hold 11 public hearings on its proposed new rules for coal-fired power plants.

Hearings are scheduled in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Lenexa, Kan. (a suburb of Kansas City), New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

EPA officials have every reason to expect the public will be in favor of the agency’s attempt to wreck the coal industry and drive electricity prices up for tens of millions of Americans.

No hearings are set in areas that would be affected severely by the plan.

So much for accountability in government.
