Records on Fracking Should Be Available
Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials were wrong to withhold records on oil and natural gas fracking waste, a state appeals court judge ruled last week.
Of course they were. The judge was right to order the records be turned over to parties in a lawsuit involving a dispute over whether fracking waste could, after being treated, be processed through a municipal wastewater plant.
Why the ODNR withheld the records in the first place is a question, of course. But as the judge recognized, there was no question about the propriety of doing so.
Especially on controversial questions such as fracking waste, state government should not withhold information from the public.
