Ohio Schools Need Break From State

Again today, most public school students in the Ohio Valley are not in school, because of the weather. Snow and frigid temperatures have left school administrators no choice but to cancel classes repeatedly during the past month.

Many school districts will not be able to provide the state-required number of instructional days, because of the weather. Doing so would force some to extend the school year far into June.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich is asking the General Assembly to approve more “calamity days” for public schools. Those are days that could be shaved off of the instructional days rule.

Legislators should do as the governor requests. This has been a very unusual year, one for which no one could have prepared. Students, teachers and administrators should work hard to make up for it – but lawmakers should provide the break Kasich suggests.
