Rejecting Big-City Style Overspending

Hundreds of Cleveland teachers protested at a city school board meeting Tuesday, over plans to cut spending by $21 million. Imagine how upset they would have been had officials done the right thing.

Enrollment in Cleveland schools, among the worst in the state, is declining. That means less state funding, and a need to reduce spending by $21 million.

But school officials already have said they do not plan to lay off any teachers, even though fewer students usually requires fewer educators.

Perhaps Cleveland residents view the purpose of schools differently than do East Ohio residents. Let’s hope the attitude does not spread.
