Attorney General Change Welcome
During just the past 14 months, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has returned about $16.5 million to the state’s general fund. That gives Mountain State residents an idea of just how bad things were under his predecessor, Darrell McGraw.
Of the amount Morrisey has returned, $9 million will be used to help plug a major hole in the state budget for next year.
For years, McGraw’s practice was to take money the state won in lawsuits and retain it for his own office’s purposes. Millions of dollars were spent on thinly veiled political campaign initiatives.
Upon taking office, Morrisey vowed to do the right thing – to return most of the money his office collected to the state’s general fund. He has done just that. In addition, he has cleaned up the old McGraw practice of hiring outside attorneys without competitive bidding.
Good for Morrisey, then, for doing the right thing for West Virginians.
