Going to the Dogs May Help Police

Steubenville officials are right to be concerned about the cost of adding a K-9 unit to the city police department. But as many law enforcement officers who have worked with specially trained police dogs know, their assistance can be invaluable.

City Council members discussed the matter this week, with police Chief Bill McCafferty explaining the cost of a K-9 unit would be about $11,500 in addition to a patrolman’s regular salary.

A few Ohio Valley communities already have police dogs, which can perform tasks beyond the abilities of any human police officer. If only for their noses, which can sniff out substances such as drugs undetectable to humans, the dogs are very useful.

Adding a K-9 unit could beef up the Steubenville police force, and should be considered.
