Kerry Comment Absurd, Foolish
Sometimes it seems as if so-called diplomats in President Barack Obama’s administration are more interested in alienating Americans’ friends than standing up to the enemies of liberty and equality.
Secretary of State John Kerry did it last week. During a closed-door meeting of the Trilateral Commission in Washington, he said that if Israel fails to reach an agreement for a Palestinian nation to be created, it risks becoming an “apartheid state.”
What an incredibly crude, ill-considered thing to say about a nation founded because Jews wanted a homeland where they would not be treated as second-class citizens – or worse.
Kerry’s comment can be criticized on any number of grounds, not the least of which is the long-standing position of many Palestinian leaders that Israel should be wiped from the face of the earth. Thank heaven that position seems to have been moderated during the past couple of years.
Kerry immediately blamed controversy over his remarks – which he insisted he does not believe – on “partisan political” attacks. Nonsense. His comment was bound to become public, and to do harm to U.S.-Israel relations. His boss, Obama, already has done plenty in that regard.
