Funding Not Key To VA Problem

The outrageous, criminal mess at Department of Veterans Affairs health care facilities needs to be cleaned up. Americans seem united in that demand.

Now comes the tough part – making it happen. As usually is the case in such situations, there will be calls for major increases in VA funding. That, some members of Congress will argue, would solve everything.

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, disagrees. After a tour of a Columbus VA facility Friday, he stressed the problem is not money, but “a matter of accountability and management and efficiency.”

Portman is right. Dishonest bad apples in the VA need to be kicked out and in some cases prosecuted. Merely throwing money at the problem without ensuring it will be spent wisely would be no service to the nation’s military veterans.
