Volunteering to Clean Up Ohio River Banks

Some area residents remember when the Ohio Valley’s backyard – the Ohio River’s banks – was a mess. Junk and trash littered the banks for hundreds of miles.

Then, nearly a quarter-century ago, a volunteer-based campaign to clean it up began. This will be the 25th year for the Ohio River Sweep.

It works only because hundreds of local residents volunteer a few hours once a year to scour the river banks and clean up the trash and junk.

This year’s event is scheduled for next Saturday. Starting locations for River Sweep volunteers in our area include Wheeling, Moundsville, Wellsburg, Steubenville, New Martinsville and Paden City.

If you’d like to help, we encourage you to volunteer. For more information, go to www.OhioRiverSweep.org.
