Benwood Officials Right To Move Slowly
Sometimes it seems that when reform is on the horizon, government moves at the speed of a molasses flow. On rare occasions, that is a good idea.
One of those occasions is occurring now in Benwood, where city officials are thinking of closing down the municipal garbage collection department. Service would be provided by a private company.
Most members of City Council seem to think that is a good idea. But action on it may not come for another two months.
That is because council members want to read and consider a 30-page contract proposal from Republic Services of Wheeling. At first glance, it seems appealing.
But city officials are right to delay action until they understand the contract fully. Better to move slowly now than to make a consequential mistake.
