Don’t Let Carefree Fun Become Deadly

With the summer recreation season barely under way, two area men already have been killed in off-road vehicle accidents.

Dillon Jackson, 23, of New Martinsville, died in a utility terrain vehicle crash Sunday in Marshall County. His passenger was injured seriously.

On April 12, Chase Crow, 18, of Weirton, perished in an all-terrain vehicle accident near Burgettstown, Pa.

ATV/UTV accidents occur regularly in our area. Even when fatalities are not involved, the consequences are serious, as was the case May 5 in Monroe County, when two women were hurt badly enough to require they be taken by helicopter to a hospital.

Law enforcement officials said unsafe speed usually is a factor in ATV/UTV accidents. Other hazardous behavior, including allowing children to drive or ride the vehicles unsafely, also is common.

If you enjoy off-road vehicles, please be careful. ATVs and UTVs can be carefree fun, if used prudently. But they can also be deadly – with the difference measured in a fraction of a second.
