Iran Being Given Too Many Breaks

Iran continues to be a major sponsor of terrorism, the State Department concluded in a recent report. Yet last Friday, in part because of U.S. leadership, 36 financial powerhouse nations suspended measures meant to prevent Iran from laundering money for use in funding terrorism.

Members of the Financial Action Task Force took the step, based on Iran’s promises it intends to do more to combat money laundering and financing for terrorism. If Iran fails to keep that pledge, the FATF will resume taking action in 12 months. Meanwhile, the group will provide “technical assistance” on money laundering requested by Iran.

So, in essence, Tehran is being given a one-year break, during which major nations will share their secrets for battling financing of terrorism. That should give Iran plenty of help in circumventing such actions.

Under President Barack Obama, U.S. policy toward Iran has been crazy. In some ways, it appears Obama trusts the “death to America” crowd overseas more than he does political opponents right here at home.
