Approve ‘Brunch Bill’ Proposal in Wheeling

Wheeling City Council has been asked to permit sale of alcoholic beverages as early at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Current state law, from which home rule cities such as Wheeling can exempt themselves, bans sale of alcohol before 1 p.m. on Sundays unless voters in individual counties approve a ballot measure.

Such action, already taken in Charleston, has been referred to as a “brunch bill.” That is because it would affect people who like an alcoholic beverage with brunch on Sunday morning.

Those in the restaurant and tourism businesses want the exemption because it would make Wheeling more attractive to visitors from other states.

Though the change will not be any sort of shot in the arm for the local economy, it could help. Council should make the change.
