Helping Scio Correct Water System Woes

State and perhaps federal funding should be made available to the village of Scio to deal with a clear and present danger to the public’s health.

As we reported last week, customers of the village water system have been advised not to consume water from it in any way. Even using the water for washing clothes and bathing should be limited.

High levels of manganese, exceeding levels the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says are healthy, have been found in the water. Action taken by the village in July failed to correct the problem.

Finding a solution may be too expensive for the village to afford. State and possibly federal assistance should be approved immediately — because this clearly is a public health emergency.
