Porter Deserves Commendation

Most of us would leap at the opportunity to earn an additional $30,000, even if it meant lots of work on top of our usual responsibilities. Not Ben Porter. He turned down such an offer.

Porter is superintendent of the Union Local school district. In addition to his normal duties, he also plans to work as a middle school principal, at least for a time.

Board of education members, recognizing they had a bargain on their hands, told Porter they would pay him a $30,000 stipend for taking on the new workload.

Thanks, but no thanks, Porter replied. He wants the board to use the $30,000 for a new leadership training program that should benefit many Union Local staff members, as well as students in the district.

Wow. That is quite a sacrifice. Porter deserves enormous credit for making it. Like many school administrators, his motto is that the kids come first. Good for him for literally putting his money where his mouth is.
