Council Right To Act on Pool
No doubt a decision by Moundsville City Council this week will be somewhat controversial. The one councilman who voted against it already has expressed serious reservations.
But the five council members who voted in favor of the measure were right to make a decision on an issue that has been kicked around for months already: the city’s Four Seasons Pool. Discussions and debates over what to do about the pool have been going on for long enough that anyone with an opinion has had ample time to express it.
The question amounts to this: Should the city invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairing the existing pool or devote its resources to building a new one?
On Tuesday, five council members agreed to investigate bank funding to begin repairs of a failing dehumidification unit at the pool. The cost is expected to be about $300,000.
Councilman David Haynes voted against the plan, saying Moundsville taxpayers have not been given a chance to agree to it.
Council members are representatives of the people, however. It is their responsibility to make the tough decisions — and they are right to do so, unless, of course, substantial public opposition surfaces before they actually proceed with the plan.
