Renew Senior Services Levy

Much of the hard-earned money we pay in taxes seems to disappear down the proverbial rathole. We do not seem to see any benefits flowing to us in exchange for our support of government.

It is different at the local level. We see our tax dollars at work in our towns, townships, counties and schools. We can see the good our money does with our own eyes — and if we do not see enough of it, local officials we may know personally will have reason to fear our wrath.

Every few years, they must come back to us to have local property tax levies reauthorized through ballot referendums.

Doing that for one local government service will be among the easiest decisions Belmont County voters have to make in the Nov. 8 election.

A 1-mill levy supporting Senior Services of Belmont County is up for renewal this year. Voters are being ask to reauthorize it for another five years.

Renewing the levy will mean no new taxes. The amount voters pay each year to support Senior Services will not change, unless, of course, the value of their property changes.

More than 2,000 Belmont County residents 60 years of age and older benefit from Senior Services programs. Among services offered them are healthy meals, transportation, help with some household tasks, personal care and recreation.

The idea behind Senior Services is to help Belmont County residents who do not want to go to nursing facilities stay in their own homes. That saves everyone money — and almost always is preferred by those helped.

Voters have renewed the levy many times, helping ensure Senior Services can continue doing its excellent, important work. Those casting ballots in Belmont County this year should keep that record intact by renewing the levy.
