School Security Training Critical

Buckeye Local Board of Education member Russell Cominsky is suggesting school personnel should make safety and security training a priority. He made the point during a board meeting this week.

Incredibly, he has been criticized by some for taking that position, it has been reported.

Cominsky is right. More to the point, while there may be some disagreement about precisely how to handle safety and security training, we have no doubt every member of the school board agrees with him in principle.

School officials and personnel throughout our area have to cope with enormous demands on their time, concentration and, yes, money. It is fair to wonder how many of them have lost count of the number of times they have been told something needs to be their “top priority.”

School officials should make such security education a regular, high-priority part of their in-service programs for personnel. Often, it can be accomplished at little cost by asking for help from a local law enforcement agency.

Chances are only a tiny percentage of school staff members will ever need to know how to keep students and themselves safe from dangerous, perhaps armed, intruders.

But if the need ever arises, good, practical training can save lives.
