Avoiding Another Flood in Follansbee

Victims of severe flooding in southeastern West Virginia during June deserve every bit of the attention that has been focused on them. Several communities were hit very, very hard.

But just weeks later, Follansbee suffered severe flooding, too. That community also needs help.

City officials are hoping for two kinds of assistance. First, they need help paying the bills. In September, City Manager John DeStefano reported Follansbee had been billed $353,619 by contractors involved in flood cleanup work.

Surely, somewhere in Washington a few dollars can be found to help Follansbee with what is small change for the federal government but big money for a small town.

Follansbee needs another kind of help, with work on a culvert that became blocked during heavy rain in July. A larger culvert is needed to avoid a repeat of the summer inundation.

State Division of Highways officials already have found ways to do some flood prevention work in the city. They should make it a priority to take care of the culvert project, too. Follansbee residents should not have to worry about another flood that could be prevented.
