Be Cautious On Recreation Post

Steubenville officials will have the opportunity in April to do something that was discussed last year. They should be careful not to make an irreversible error.

During budget discussions in December, the possibility of eliminating the position of city parks and recreation director was discussed. One suggestion was that some part-time recreation aides could handle the director’s responsibilities. Their pay should be increased from the current $8 an hour to $15, one councilman suggested.

Last week, Parks and Recreation Director Beth Sills said she plans to resign, effective March 31. City Manager Jim Mavromatis said a new director will be sought.

Sills’ departure could prompt some council members to revisit the December suggestion.

They should be very careful — certainly not granting pay raises that, realistically, would be difficult if not impossible to rescind. And before eliminating a management position to save money, they should investigate whether that is prudent in the long run.
