Reject New Faculty Senate Requirement
A bill approved by the state Senate to give West Virginia public schools more flexibility in meeting the requirement for 180 days of instruction sounds good — with one exception.
School systems plagued by bad weather or other emergencies, often have to add days to the school year to meet the 180-day rule. The bill would allow them to “bank” time earned by adding minutes or hours to school days in order to hit the 180 days.
But it also would require school districts to provide six two-hour blocks of time during the school day for faculty senate meetings each year. That is up from the current requirement of four.
That detracts from the time students are in class learning, and should be removed from the bill.
