Weirton Planning Process Important
Comprehensive planning is a chore many municipalities must undertake on a regular basis. But the process in Weirton this year is more important than it has been for a long time.
Members of the city Planning Commission already have begun work to update the plan, last addressed more than 17 years ago.
Much has changed since then. A recent occurrence holds enormous promise for residents of Weirton and the surrounding area.
Earlier this month, it was revealed the ArcelorMittal steel company is selling about 1,100 acres in Weirton to the Frontier Group. That opens the way to redevelopment of the property.
The site is inviting to developers for many reasons. City officials already have undertaken to make it more so on the municipal government level.
How to proceed — what to do to capitalize on the big tract of land — will be a key part of rewriting the comprehensive plan.
A public hearing on the plan has been scheduled for 7 p.m. April 19 at the Milsop Community Center. Clearly, this is one planning session anyone interested in the future of Weirton will want to attend.
