Volunteers on Pool Project Earn Praise

Steubenville’s Belleview Park swimming pool might well have been closed this summer. As City Manager Jim Mavromatis told City Council members, the pool needed major repair and renovation work.

That idea did not sit well with many in the neighborhood served by the pool. Some clearly worried that if the facility was closed temporarily, it might never reopen. Several council members assured the public that was not the intent.

But the pool apparently will not have to be closed, in part because some council members put their energy where their mouths are.

It was revealed last week a local contractor wants to donate his time and provide materials to make necessary repairs at the pool. The project may be completed by Memorial Day, allowing the pool to open then. Several council members plan to assist with the work.

Good for the contractor and good for the council members. Their dedication to their community should be remembered by patrons of the Belleview pool.
