Why a Water Rate Increase Bombed in Bellaire

Gee, There’s an Idea!

During West Virginia University Academic Media Day this week in Morgantown, WVU President E. Gordon Gee spoke of what is a pressing problem for West Virginia — keeping the best and brightest in the state after they have graduated from institutions of higher learning.

He jokingly told an idea he has to keep educated youths in West Virginia — one he apparently stole from President Donald Trump.

“I think we should build a wall around West Virginia and make Ohio pay for it,” Gee said. “I told that joke when I sat down with governors Jim Justice (of West Virginia) and John Kasich (of Ohio) last week. Gov. Kasich didn’t think it was funny.”

An Explosive Error

Bellaire Village Council members are still perplexed as to how a proposed ordinance raising the village’s water rates by $12.50 per month came to be on their desks at the last meeting. It was not crafted by council’s ordinance committee, and did not appear to be put into legal form by Village Solicitor Joe Vavra.

They noticed the word “ordinance” was misspelled on the measure, which was said to be an “ordnance.”

By definition, an “ordnance” pertains to a storage of weapons, ammunition, and related equipment. An “ordinance, ” meanwhile, is an authoritative order or a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority.

Remembering Rooney

Wheeling resident Bob Rine said the recent death of Dan Rooney brought to mind a day in 2008 when he met the Steelers’ owner. Rine said Rooney came to Wheeling in 2008 when he was campaigning for Barack Obama. Rine said, “He (Rooney) made a stop at what was then a restaurant next to Miklas Meat Market on Carmel Road and which is now Charlie Schlegel’s Mexican place. I met him there, shook his hand and got his autograph on a baseball where I already had his father Art and his brother Art Jr. and several other sports figures, including Pie Traynor. I treasure that ball!”
