– To the Junior League of Wheeling, honored by the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce with its 2017 Kathy Fortunato Service Award. Since its inception in 1940, the Junior League of Wheeling has been involved in a variety of projects to benefit area children, including the Janie S. Altmeyer Playground at Heritage Port.

– To Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal of Wheeling, honored by the Chamber of Commerce with its Community Commitment Award. Kalkreuth supports many worthwhile programs.

– To local Marine Corps veterans, especially to Steve Duncil, who did something very special for a local boy. Upon learning Dominic Alexander, 8, of St. Clairsville, has been battling cancer, the Marines came up with a plan. The lad is the grandson of one of their number, Larry Alexander. Duncil, who was wounded on three occasions during wartime service, donated one of his three Purple Heart Medals. The Marine veterans held a special ceremony, presenting Dominic Alexander with the medal “in admiration for his Marine spirit and determination …” Reportedly, the boy now has been found to be free of cancer.
