Fed Up With Attacks

A few gentle bipartisan jabs at politicians are to be expected, even encouraged, from some in the entertainment world. But many of its denizens have gone far beyond that in their attacks on President Donald Trump.

Turns out, some in their audiences don’t like that.

Television viewership of the Grammy Awards this year, full of cheap shots against Trump, was down 24 percent from last year’s program. Viewership also was down for the Golden Globes and Academy Award telecasts, which similarly included lots of Trump bashing.

Ought this to send a message to musicians, television and movie stars who assume the public wants to hear them preach? Yes.

The message is that many Americans expect entertainment from their entertainers, not mean-spirited attacks and pseudo-intellectual lectures. Will the stars get that?

Probably not.
