Protecting Society From Viciousness
Five people arrested in Braxton County several days ago ought to be imprisoned for the rest of their lives, if they are guilty of charges against them.
West Virginia State Police say Zachary Bailey, 27, is accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl and recording the attacks on video. Allegedly, four members of the child’s family requested he make the video recordings. They have been arrested, too.
Anyone guilty of harming a child in any way ought to be punished severely. But retribution is only part of the reason for prison sentences. The other is to keep dangerous criminals locked away so they cannot harm others.
Under West Virginia law, a crime like that Bailey is accused of is punishable by no less than 25 years in prison and as much as 100.
Anyone who would do what Bailey and the others allegedly did to that precious child is, by definition, vicious. If guilty, they should never be released.
