Build New Animal Shelter in Monroe

Taxpayers have come to expect that when local governments decide to construct new buildings, for virtually any purpose, the price tags will be well up into six — or seven — figures. It should have been a pleasant surprise to Monroe County residents, then, that the estimate for a new animal shelter is less than $100,000.

To be precise, as county commissioners learned this week, the total for construction of the building is expected to be $98,600. Some additional costs for plumbing and electrical work may have to be added.

County Dog Warden Rhonda Piatt reminded commissioners that the current shelter is inadequate and is decaying.

More than $73,000 already has been raised for the new shelter, Piatt noted.

“I think this needs to be a priority,” Commissioner Tim Price said, adding, “We have kicked this shelter can down the road for years.”

Precisely. Assuming no surprises pop up, commissioners should go ahead with the new shelter.
