Education Part Of Farm Bureaus

Ohio’s farmers are a cut above — they already know that. But it is nice to see a little recognition from the American Farm Bureau, which gave eight of the 24 County Activities of Excellence awards nationwide to Ohio county farm bureaus.

“Once again, Ohio has more CAE winners than any other state,” said Melinda Witten, Ohio Farm Bureau director, leadership programming.

Among those counties honored were three from East Ohio.

Belmont County’s farm bureau was recognized for its partnership with KFC, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to provide a Veteran’s Salute thank-you dinner.

In Jefferson County, the ChickQuest program used a curriculum developed by Ohio State University to have volunteers place incubators in third-grade classrooms so the kids could learn “about the life cycle of chickens, and the composition and attributes of an egg and cared for the chicks for 3-5 days.”

Noble County’s farm bureau was singled out for its Ag School Days, during which third-graders from Noble and Guernsey counties — about 350 to 400 students — got to witness popcorn production. There was a demonstration to show the corn as it came off the cob, and then as it was turned into popcorn. Children got to see the stages that go into producing a favorite treat, from plant to final product.

Our farm bureaus work hard year-round to provide programming and resources that do not simply benefit the agricultural community, but teach all our kids where their food and other agricultural products come from, and who makes that happen.

Congratulations to the folks in Belmont, Jefferson and Noble counties and all the other counties who showed the rest of the nation how farm bureaus are supposed to work.
