Renew Hancock County School Levy

It is likely that some people who voted for a tax levy to provide supplemental funding for Hancock County schools when it first went into effect have had the pleasure of watching it benefit their great-grandchildren. The levy has been in effect that long.

For nearly 70 years, Hancock County voters have renewed the levy every time it has been on the ballot, according to Hancock County school Superintendent Tim Woodward. That is quite a record of all-out support for public education by voters.

On Tuesday, they will be asked to step up once more. Renewal of the levy will be on the general election ballot.

It is important to note that voting for the levy will not result in a tax increase. Rates in effect now will merely remain for another five years.

If renewed, the levy will provide about $7 million a year for schools. It will pay for essential services and programs that benefit children directly.

In the past, substantial portions of levy funds have been used for regular maintenance and improvements in school facilities. In the future, basic education needs — along with student safety and security initiatives — are to be the focus. School resource officers are on that list.

A complete list of ways in which levy money will be spent is included on the election ballot. Suffice it to say a comprehensive approach is being taken.

Most Hancock County residents understand the importance of the highest-quality schools they can afford. Nearly 70 years of levy approvals make that plain.

More than ever, that emphasis — that willingness to pay a little more for good schools — is vital.

The News-Register endorses the Hancock County school levy. We urge voters to cast ballots in favor of renewing it, for the good of children who need the best educations that can be provided.
