Preserving History In Martins Ferry

Throughout the United States, bits and pieces of our heritage are being allowed to rot and rust into oblivion. Thanks to a local young man, that will not happen in Martins Ferry.

Boy Scout Mason Kyer, 17, of St. Clairsville, became concerned about the condition of the gun carriage on which a Civil War cannon at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Martins Ferry is displayed.

So Kyer, the son of Curtis and Brenda Kyer, did something about it.

He raised about $20,000 to have a new gun carriage, made of aluminum but appearing just like the original wood, made. It was installed and rededicated during the weekend.

Good for Mason Kyer! Thanks to him, future generations will be able to see the old cannon, not merely see photographs of what once stood at the site. Kyer has done an enormous service — and has earned high commendation.
