Longterm Jobs Vital

News last week that the Weirton-Steubenville Metropolitan area is in the midst of a boom in construction jobs was gratifying. About 2,400 people are employed by that industry in the area, which includes Jefferson, Brooke and Hancock counties.

But those jobs will last only as long as it takes to complete construction projects. What our region needs is more good longterm job opportunities, comparatively few of which will be left behind once the construction boom subsides.

Local officials are well aware of that.

Let us hope that state and federal officials involved in providing economic development assistance do not overlook the need.
