Thanks for Approving Senior Services Levy

Editor, News-Register:

The voters of Belmont County deserve a sincere word of thanks for once again supporting the renewal of a Senior Services levy.

On Nov. 6, a significant majority of county voters elected to stand behind the efforts of Senior Services of Belmont County and more than 1,000 seniors served by the agency. On behalf of the seniors who rely on these services and this vital source of funding for them – thank you.

This five-year, 1-mill levy – one of three levies that generate local funds for Senior Services of Belmont County – is a key component in the funding formula that allows more than 850 hot meals to be delivered to seniors throughout the county five days a week. It allows active senior centers to operate in 10 local communities, where membership in the centers continues to grow. Levy-generated funding for Senior Services helps provide transportation for seniors who may have no other way of getting to medical appointments, the grocery store or other destinations. The services also provide homemaking and personal care, health education, caregiver respite, group outings from the senior centers, community activities and other services.

In fact, the need for these services has never been greater in light of the continuously increasing population of senior citizens living in Belmont County. Through the Senior Services program, we as a community are helping these seniors maintain their independence well into their golden years.

The staff at Senior Services of Belmont County and the Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services works hard to make the Senior Services program the best it can be. Again, we would like to thank the voters of Belmont County for supporting the seniors and the Senior Services program.
