Churchill Warned Us

Editor, News-Register:

I agree completely with Mike Myer’s recent Commentary on May 19 that Muslin terrorists are simply evil. His column was absolutely correct. History is to that effect. They have been attacking the Western World since the 8th Century – e.g. the Battle of Tours in France in 732 A.D.

The “Savior of Modern Western Civilization,” Winston S. Churchill, eloquently described militant Islamism. He referred to it then as “Militant Mohammedism.” After explaining their horrible treatment of women, and their “fanatical frenzy,” he said:

“Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. … Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith … raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science – the science against which it had vainly struggled – the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

He knew what he was talking about as he wrote this when he was only 24 years old, and had just returned from the Battle of Omdurman in Africa, where he faced them personally. He then became the man who saved the world from Hitler by standing strong when few did, stating in 1940, “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. … we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall never surrender.” He then again warned the Western World in 1946 about the threat of Soviet Communism by eloquently stating in Fulton, Missouri, that an “Iron Curtain” had descended across Europe! He had such blinding insight in analyzing tyrants and terrorists, and warning the Free World of the same. He should be listened to by our leaders as to the “militant Muslims” also.

We need a leader like Churchill! He was one of the greats of the 20th Century, indeed one of the greatest leaders of democracy in history.

Mr. Myer is to be commended for his recognition of the clear status of matters on this issue.
