Americans No Longer United

Editor, News Register:

If the Bowe Bergdahl story has taught us anything, it’s that the United States is no longer so united. Thirteen years ago this September, we were united in grief at the deaths of thousands of American citizens at the hands of terrorists. Last week, in what should have been a celebratory bookend to that horrendous day, Americans learned that our only POW in Afghanistan had been released by his captors in exchange for five men held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Unfortunately, it was not so celebratory. Since the announcement we have seen politicians, former military members, and television pundits pick apart Sgt. Bergdahl and his family. Quite frankly, it makes me sick. It also shows how divided and driven by pointless politics we have become.
