Help Children With Autism

Editor, News-Register:

On your mark, get set, GO! That was the phrase one of our students used to start the 1st annual COLOR ME AU-SOME 5K last Saturday at Heritage Port. Eleven hundred runners and walkers decked out in white T-shirts, sunglasses, and even some tutus showed up to participate in Wheeling’s first ever color run. However, this was not your typical 5K! Runners and walkers were pelted with clouds of bright colors at four stations throughout the race. Runners also enjoyed the scenic views of Wheeling at they ran and walked across the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. There was a rainbow of colors as participants crossed the finish line, as well as a sea of smiles.

COLOR ME AU-SOME was a huge success for the Augusta Levy Learning Center, the event’s sponsor. Augusta Levy is West Virginia’s first and largest center for young children with autism. Using evidence based treatment, the Levy Center helps young children overcome the challenges posed by autism, a neurological disorder that affects one in 68 children today.

Treating children with autism requires a team effort, and the city of Wheeling became a part of that team last Saturday. That is why the parents and therapists at the Levy Center wish to thank the Wheeling community for the tremendous support provided to make COLOR ME AU-SOME a success. Many thanks to the City of Wheeling, the Wheeling Police Department, the Wheeling Fire Department, WesBanco Arena, Carl Kondrach, Jessica Kondrach, and Robert Scatterday. Thank you to our title sponsors: Zambito Family Dentistry, Lion Industries, Woodbine House Book Publishing, Paramount Support Services, Lamar, BRACS Media Brokers and WTRF. We would also like to thank our other sponsors: Yarman Contracting, Staley Communication, Quaker Steak and Lube, Subway, Papa Johns (Bridgeport), DiCarlos, Miller Chiropractic, JLG Rental Properties, R.M.
